If you have progressive values and are looking for an internship that will make a difference, we’ve got it! Illinois Tenth Congressional District Democrats (Tenth Dems) is accepting applications for its internship program. The internship is a substantive program designed for high school, college, graduate, and law students seeking an opportunity to become deeply engaged in the political process.

Tenth Dems is a grassroots political organization that helps mobilize voters and activists throughout the 10th Congressional District. It’s a good time to complete a political internship as we organize during this critical period in our nation’s history.

Tenth Dems interns have staffed issue forums and events for elected officials and candidates up and down the ballot, worked on campaigns, and conducted research. We help build the Democratic infrastructure to elect Democrats at all levels of government. Interns may choose to complete general internships or specialize in areas such as media, field, communications, technology, volunteer management, and political outreach.

Internships are unpaid, educational positions; however, academic credit is often available.

“This is an opportunity to learn about grassroots politics and to develop important skills,” said former State Representative and Tenth Dems Founder Lauren Beth Gash. “Many interns have gone on to paid political positions with local campaigns or jobs in Springfield, Washington, and with national not-for-profit organizations. Many have gone on to become elected officials themselves.”

Residency in the 10th Congressional District is not required, but applicants must have an interest in electing Democrats in this area. Interns must devote a minimum of 16 hours per week during the summer, or 8 hours per week during the fall or spring. Applicants should submit a brief paragraph explaining why they would like to be part of the program, along with a resume summarizing their educational background and activities. “Let’s Talk Politics” provided a great night with so many Democratic friends. Dinner together and a robust conversation made for a full evening. More than 65 people joined Tenth Dems, along with our co-hosts Moraine Democrats and Lake County Democrats. (It was such an overwhelming response that we had to cut off registration!) Thanks to all the volunteers who helped, and for all who came out. “Let’s Talk Politics” means a lot to our group — TDU (Tenth Dems University), our grassroots party school, has organized this series of discussions for years — and we must keep moving forward now more than ever.
