Waukegan Welcomes African American Museum

By Lauren Beth Gash

Chair, Lake County Democrats

It was an honor to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the African American Museum at  England Manor on Saturday, September 4.

I’ve watched this project blossom from several items, to a table at a Juneteenth celebration, to a display with Waukegan Park District to, now, a full-fledged museum.

This growth reflects hard work and an increase in interest as more and more people realize how important it is to acknowledge the experiences and contributions of African Americans as part of American history.

Having the African American Museum here in Lake County will help keep moving us in the right direction. Congratulations to Sylvia England for her dedicated efforts, and to all who worked so hard to bring this major project to fruition.

News & Notes for 9-1-2021: What we honor on Labor Day

September 1, 2021

What We Honor on Labor Day

Labor Day is more than just a chance to celebrate the end of summer with family and friends. Without the labor movement, there would be no weekends, no 8-hour days, few benefits, and no chance for a livable wage. Labor Day celebrates the history of organizing for justice and pushing to move the country forward.

As we observe this Labor Day, we should also recognize what Democrats are doing right now to support working Americans. Under Democratic leadership, the U.S. economy has created more than 4 million jobs and is growing at the fastest rate in nearly 40 years. And with the Build Back Better agenda, millions of American workers will be trained for high-quality jobs in growing sectors.

Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, middle-class families and workers with children are receiving a major tax cut. In addition, President Biden led an effort to negotiate broad support for a bipartisan infrastructure bill that will create millions of jobs, bringing a needed boost to communities across the country.

In other good news for working people, Biden appointees Gwynne Wilcox and David Prouty were confirmed by the Senate last month for seats on the National Labor Relations Board, paving the way for a Democratic majority that is likely to reverse a series of Trump-era, anti-labor decisions.

Democrats are building an economy that works from the middle out and are consistently standing up and fighting to empower workers to achieve good jobs, fair wages, and safe working conditions. That’s worth celebrating this Labor Day!

Local Democrats To Hold Fall Internship Program That Will Make A Difference

If you have progressive values and are looking for a fall internship that will make a difference, have we got a deal for you! The Tenth Congressional District Democrats (Tenth Dems) is now accepting applications for its Fall 2021 Internship Program. The internship is a substantive program designed for high school, college, and graduate students seeking an opportunity to become deeply engaged in the political process.

Tenth Dems is a grassroots political organization that helps mobilize voters and activists in one of the most widely-watched Congressional districts in the country, featuring battle-tested member of the US House of Representatives Brad Schneider. Now is a unique time to complete a political internship as we transition from the 2020 elections and prepare for supporting and electing Democrats in 2022.

Tenth Dems interns have staffed issue forums and virtual events for elected officials and candidates up and down the ballot, worked on campaigns, and conducted research. Tenth Dems interns were very active during the 2020 election cycle, including helping in legislative races, at the county board level, with countywide candidates, and in turning out the vote for Democrats running for the US House of Representatives and the White House. Interns may choose to complete general internships or specialize in areas such as media, technology, volunteer management, and political outreach.

(Note: photo taken before March 2020)

Internships are unpaid, educational positions; however, academic credit is often available.

“This is an opportunity to learn about a grassroots political organization and to develop important skills,” said former State Representative Lauren Beth Gash, Founding Chair of Tenth Dems. “Many of our interns have gone on to law school or other graduate programs, paid political positions with local campaigns, or jobs in Springfield, in Washington or with national not-for-profit organizations.”

Acceptance into the program is selective, competitive, and contingent upon a virtual interview. Residence in the 10th District isn’t required. Applicants must have an interest in electing Democrats and generally devote a minimum of 8 hours per week to the internship during the fall (16 hours during the summer).

Fall internships will be conducted remotely, although in-person opportunities (for those comfortable with them) will be available. Applicants should submit a brief paragraph explaining why they would like to be part of the program, along with a resume summarizing their educational background and activities. Neither need be formal.

A Weekend of Celebrations

With Libertyville Days and Indian Independence Day, it was a weekend to celebrate in Lake County. The Libertyville Days parade on Saturday was amazing and the warm reception really showed how much we’ve been able to change things over the years from what was once considered a Republican stronghold to a more Democratic area. On Sunday, Congressman Brad Schneider and State Representative Dan Didech joined the Indian Independence Day celebration in Vernon Hills, commemorating India’s independence from the United Kingdom. What a great summer weekend, Democrats!
