Lake Forest, IL — First Mark Robinson, and now Charlie Kirk. The embattled Republican candidate for Governor of North Carolina Mark Robinson was recently tapped to headline a north suburban fundraiser with the goal of “supporting local candidates and helping Trump-Vance win the battleground state of Wisconsin.” When the public was alerted to this connection, local Republicans tried pointing fingers at one another and distancing themselves from Robinson. But within days of the Mark Robinson debacle, apparently having learned nothing, local Republicans were back at it. Jim Carris, the Republican candidate for Congress in the 10th District, currently represented by Democrat Brad Schneider, spoke alongside extreme right-wing media personality Charlie Kirk.
On Monday, September 23, 2024, Republican candidate for Congress Jim Carris spoke alongside Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk at an event in Lake Forest. Turning Point USA has been described as intentionally pivoting to Christian nationalism. A proponent of a nationwide abortion ban, Charlie Kirk has campaigned with JD Vance and proudly organized an effort to attack the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., among numerous other controversial moves.
“Republicans in Lake County just don’t learn. Donald Trump, Mark Robinson, and Jim Carris are all too extreme,” said Lake County Democrats Chair Lauren Beth Gash. “Voters are going to reject Trump once again, and Jim Carris, Charlie Kirk’s new best friend, is going to lose too. People aren’t fooled by the pathetic games played by Republican politicians like Jim Carris who desperately try to come across to voters as sensible, and then act another way away from the cameras when they’re with their right-wing buddies. This is a tired act that voters in Lake County have seen—and rejected—before.”
