Votes are official — Wow, Democrats did great!

The votes have been officially counted — what a great job by Democrats in the 10th District! President-elect Joe Biden won over 60% of the vote. So did Congressman Brad Schneider. In Lake County, grassroots work supporting candidates up and down the ballot helped Congresswoman Lauren Underwood and Congressman Sean Casten, members of Congress from adjacent districts who also represent parts of Lake County, win reelection. And there were even more victories.

In the state legislature, Democrats won in both the Senate (Senator Melinda Bush) and the House, including State Representatives Joyce Mason, Sam Yingling, Rita Mayfield, Dan Didech, Bob Morgan, Jonathan Carroll, Robyn Gabel, and Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz.

Not only did Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court Erin Cartwright Weinstein win comfortably in her first race since knocking off a Republican incumbent, but she was joined by two more Democrats who flipped offices from red to blue in tough, competitive campaigns. There is a new Lake County Coroner, Jennifer Banek! And there’s a new Lake County State’s Attorney, Eric Rinehart!

And those two new countywide officeholders weren’t the only ones who defeated Republicans who were running for reelection. Democrats flipped three seats on the Lake County Board! Gina Roberts, Carissa Casbon, and Paras Parekh all won, and are new Lake County Board Members. Great work! They continued the trend that saw Democrats win control of the Lake County Board for the first time in history in 2018, when it became led by Chair Sandy Hart, who also just won her own race. Democratic Lake County Board Member Marah Altenberg, on the ballot for the first time, easily defeated her Republican opponent too.

Marnie Slavin won her judicial contest. Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx also was victorious. And Rhoda Pierce, a first-time candidate for North Shore Water Reclamation District, captured 66% of the vote in her winning effort.

There were so many Democratic candidates who won. It’d be amazing if we didn’t know how much hard work went into it, from the candidates, their campaigns, and from our Tenth Dems members and friends. It truly was a team effort and the voters made it clear who now reflects their values. Ultimately, that’s why we came out on top.

Congratulations to everyone who helped make 2020 such a great year for Democrats in the 10th District. We have a lot of work to do at every level supporting the Democrats who have been elected, and, yes, electing even more. Let’s keep going!
