Local Democrats Host Convention with Presidential Straw Poll and Caucus

Lincolnshire, IL — The Tenth Congressional District Democrats (Tenth Dems) held a convention with a presidential straw poll and an Iowa style caucus on Saturday, January 25, at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. Over 100 people attended. Tenth Dems members and current high school students were eligible to vote.

There was a lot of energy in the room. Many people came in their favorite candidate’s gear, including t-shirts, buttons, and hats. All the presidential campaigns were invited. Surrogates spoke on behalf of Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, Mike Bloomberg, Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg, and Amy Klobuchar.
The convention featured a straw poll and a caucus, which was run by members of the Stevenson High School Political Action Club. While votes in the poll were being counted, Congressman Brad Schneider spoke about the need to elect a Democrat for President.
The results of the straw poll were as follows:
1. Buttigieg
2. Biden
3. (tie) Klobuchar and Warren
5. (tie) Bloomberg and Sanders
7. Andrew Yang
No other candidates received votes.

After Stevenson students explained the rules of the caucus, the first round of caucusing took place. Just like with the Iowa caucuses, candidates needed to obtain 15% of votes cast in the caucus to be viable for the next round. Three candidates advanced: Pete Buttigieg, Joe Biden, and Amy Klobuchar. Even though they were tied in the straw poll, Klobuchar advanced past round one of the caucus but Warren did not. This illustrated a key difference often seen between polls and caucuses: supporters need to stay for the entire caucus, but they can vote and leave when participating in a poll.

With only three candidates viable for the second round of caucusing, supporters of the other candidates were free to switch to one of the remaining candidates. Enthusiastic backers of Buttigieg, Biden, and Klobuchar tried to recruit the others to their side. In the end, Buttigieg finished in first place, Klobuchar second, and Biden third.
